Technology Stack
Technologies used in the migration project.
Business Goal
Allow non-technical users to manage website content using WPBakery Page Builder while maintaining the appearance, responsiveness, and functionality of the existing custom-built website.
Project Background
Understanding why this migration was necessary and what made it technically challenging.
The Challenge
The client had a large-scale WooCommerce store built on a fully custom WordPress theme. While the theme was performant and feature-rich, it created a significant operational bottleneck. Every content update required a developer, and the client’s marketing team couldn’t make simple changes without engineering involvement.
The Migration Decision
The decision was made to migrate to WPBakery Page Builder. This would empower the marketing team to manage content independently while maintaining the site’s professional appearance. However, this wasn’t a simple theme swap. The migration required:
- Pixel-perfect recreation of every layout
- Complete preservation of all existing functionality
- Maintaining responsive behavior across all devices
- Seamless integration with Revolution Slider
- Zero downtime during the transition
Technical Complexity
The custom theme had years of technical debt, multiple developer contributions, and complex business logic embedded in template files. Migrating to WPBakery required deep understanding of both the existing codebase and the page builder’s architecture. The project demanded careful investigation, systematic refactoring, and rigorous testing to ensure nothing broke in production.
Key Responsibilities
Theme Migration
Rebuilding pages using WPBakery while maintaining pixel-perfect responsiveness and preserving all existing functionality.
Custom Development
Extending WPBakery with custom PHP, JavaScript, and CSS where limitations existed in the page builder.
Technical Investigation
Investigating legacy theme code via FTP to understand existing architecture and identify improvement areas.
Production Support
Ongoing maintenance including checkout issues, shop improvements, inventory tasks, and bug fixing.
Code Quality
Ensuring all code followed WordPress standards, was well-documented, and maintained consistency across the team.
Collaboration
Working with a team of 5 engineers to coordinate development and ensure smooth migration.
Engineering Challenges
Each challenge required systematic investigation, careful implementation, and rigorous testing.
Pixel-Perfect Migration
The website had been developed entirely with a custom WordPress theme. The challenge was to rebuild every page using WPBakery without changing layouts, responsiveness, or functionality.
Created custom WPBakery components matching the original design patterns. Extended WPBakery’s core functionality with custom PHP, JavaScript, and CSS. Implemented a component-based approach for reusability.
Perfect visual parity across all pages. Content editors could now manage every aspect of the website without developer intervention.
Custom WooCommerce Sorting
The original Shop page had no product sorting feature. Users couldn’t sort by price, popularity, rating, or date, which was hurting conversions.
Developed a custom PHP solution implementing WooCommerce sorting options. Created a reusable shortcode and integrated it into the WPBakery page.
Complete sorting functionality with no performance degradation. Improved user engagement and product discovery.
WooCommerce Filter Investigation
The product filter displayed every available attribute, including attributes with no assigned products.
Investigated the legacy theme using FTP access. Tracked the filtering logic and modified the custom implementation to only display filter options containing products.
A cleaner shopping experience with only valid filter options displayed. Improved usability and reduced support tickets.
Shop UI Improvements
Multiple UI inconsistencies including product card layouts, responsive issues, and filter styling problems.
Implemented custom CSS and JavaScript to fix layout issues. Ensured consistent styling across all devices and screen sizes.
Improved visual consistency and user experience across the entire shop section.
Technical Implementation
How I approached the technical migration while maintaining code quality and system stability.
WordPress Architecture
Designed the migration strategy to leverage WordPress’s hierarchical template system while integrating WPBakery’s layout capabilities.
WooCommerce Customization
Extended WooCommerce’s core functionality with custom filters, action hooks, and template overrides.
Custom PHP Development
Developed PHP functions for sorting, filtering, and data manipulation. Created reusable shortcodes for dynamic content.
WPBakery Customization
Extended WPBakery with custom elements, parameter groups, and template configurations for maximum flexibility.
CSS & JavaScript
Wrote modular CSS with a component-based architecture. Implemented JavaScript for dynamic interactions and AJAX functionality.
Legacy Code & Debugging
Used FTP access for deep debugging and code inspection. Traced complex logic flows and implemented fixes.

Lessons Learned
Technical insights gained from this complex migration project.
Understanding Legacy Code is Critical
Before making changes to a production system, you need to understand the existing codebase thoroughly. Using FTP access to investigate the custom theme and documenting the architecture prevented costly mistakes.
Migration Requires Systematic Testing
Pixel-perfect migration isn’t achieved by visual inspection alone. Creating comprehensive test cases and validating every interaction on different devices and browsers is essential.
Performance Must Be Preserved
When adding new functionality like sorting, it’s easy to impact performance. Profiling database queries and implementing caching strategies maintain fast load times.
Collaboration Requires Clear Documentation
Working with multiple developers requires clear documentation, coding standards, and code review processes to ensure consistency across the team.
Business Value Drives Engineering Decisions
Every technical decisionβfrom implementing sorting to optimizing filtersβwas driven by business value. Balancing technical perfection with practical needs delivers real results.
Production Support Requires Proactive Monitoring
Ongoing support requires more than just fixing bugs. Implementing proactive monitoring and identifying patterns in support tickets prevents issues from becoming critical problems.
