Migrating from
WPBakery to Elementor
A complete technical migration of a large-scale WooCommerce website from WPBakery Page Builder to Elementor while maintaining pixel-perfect precision, preserving all functionality, and enabling long-term maintainability.
Project Overview
This project involved migrating a large production WooCommerce website from WPBakery Page Builder to Elementor. The client needed a more maintainable and flexible page builder solution that would allow their team to manage content efficiently while preserving the existing user experience.
The migration required rebuilding every page layout, custom components, and complex functionalitiesβincluding archive filters, product loops, and dynamic templatesβwhile ensuring zero visual regressions and maintaining full responsiveness across all devices.
Working as the Lead WordPress Engineer, I led the technical strategy, rebuilt key components, extended Elementor with custom code where necessary, and managed the complete production deployment with effectively zero downtime.

Engineering Challenges
Each challenge required systematic investigation, careful implementation, and rigorous testing.
Migrating a Large Production Website
The website contained many reusable layouts and custom functionality. Every page had to behave exactly the same after migration. No visual regressions were acceptable.
Audited the existing WPBakery implementation, documented all custom components, and created a comprehensive migration checklist for each page type.
Rebuilt each layout in Elementor, maintaining pixel-perfect precision. Extended Elementor with custom code where native widgets were insufficient.
Zero visual regressions across all pages. Content editors gained a more intuitive editing experience with Elementor’s interface.
Archive Filter System
The filter system had to behave exactly like the previous implementation. Both UI and functionality needed to match perfectly.
Deep investigation of the previous implementation to understand the filtering logic, UI behavior, and user interactions before rebuilding it in Elementor.
Recreated the entire filter system in Elementor, ensuring identical behavior and visual appearance. Maintained all filtering options and interactions.
Seamless user experience with no visible difference between old and new implementations. Users were able to continue using the site without retraining.
Dynamic Archive Templates
Created dynamic templates for category archive pages with different layouts before and after product listings. Everything needed to remain manageable through Elementor.
Analyzed the archive structure and identified how different layouts were being applied based on category type and content.
Built dynamic templates in Elementor that could display different layouts conditionally. Used custom PHP to control template selection while keeping the admin interface clean.
Flexible archive system that maintained consistency while allowing for content-specific layouts. Editors could now manage templates more efficiently.
Reusable WooCommerce Components
Built reusable product cards, category cards, product loops, category loops, and archive layouts that maintained consistency across the entire website.
Documented all existing component patterns and identified opportunities for creating reusable Elementor components.
Created consistent component structures in Elementor that could be reused across multiple pages. Ensured all components maintained visual and functional consistency.
Reduced development time for future pages and ensured consistent design language across the entire website.
Pixel-Perfect Migration
Every page needed to match the previous WPBakery implementation exactly, including spacing, typography, colors, and interactions.
Compared each page side-by-side, documenting specific styling requirements and custom CSS needed for Elementor.
Used custom CSS, JavaScript, and PHP where necessary. Extended Elementor whenever native widgets were insufficient to achieve the exact visual output.
Complete visual parity. Users couldn’t distinguish between old and new implementations based on appearance alone.
Safe Production Deployment
Managed the complete deployment process for a production website with high traffic and zero tolerance for downtime.
Assessed the production environment, identified potential deployment risks, and planned a staging-first approach.
Created staging environment from cPanel. Prepared development environment. Installed required plugins. Configured Elementor. Completed development. Tested everything. Migrated changes to production with effectively zero downtime.
Successful production deployment with zero user impact. All functionality verified and working as expected immediately after migration.
Engineering Process
A systematic approach to ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality migration.
Production Backup
Created complete backup of the production environment including database, files, and media.
Create Staging
Set up a staging environment using cPanel to mirror the production setup exactly.
Environment Setup
Installed Elementor and required plugins. Configured the page builder for the migration.
Migration Planning
Created a comprehensive migration plan covering all pages, components, and functionalities.
Page Development
Rebuilt each page in Elementor, maintaining pixel-perfect precision and functionality.
Component Development
Created reusable templates and components for consistent design and functionality.
Testing
Comprehensive testing of all pages, interactions, and business-critical functionality.
Bug Fixing
Identified and resolved any issues found during testing to ensure zero regressions.
Cross-device Testing
Tested across all devices, browsers, and screen sizes to ensure full responsiveness.
Production Deployment
Migrated changes to production environment with minimal to zero downtime.

Technologies Used
Key Contributions
The most significant engineering contributions that delivered measurable business value.
Migration Strategy
Led the technical strategy for the complete migration, including planning, component architecture, and deployment approach.
Component Rebuilding
Rebuilt major website components including header, footer, homepage, shop page, and archive templates in Elementor.
Reusable Structures
Created reusable Elementor structures and templates for consistent design across all pages and components.
Filter System Rebuild
Successfully recreated the complex archive filter system in Elementor with identical functionality and UI.
Pixel-Perfect UI
Maintained pixel-perfect precision across all pages, ensuring zero visual regressions compared to the original implementation.
Custom Extensions
Extended Elementor using custom PHP, JavaScript, and CSS where native widgets were insufficient.
Lessons Learned
Understanding Business Logic is Critical
Large migrations require understanding existing business logic before rebuilding. The filter system couldn’t have been recreated without first fully understanding how it worked in production.
Maintainability Drives Architecture
Maintainability should guide architectural decisions. Creating reusable components in Elementor reduced future development costs and made content management easier.
Reusable Components Reduce Cost
Building reusable product cards, loops, and templates significantly reduces future development time and ensures consistency across the website.
Staging Workflows Are Essential
Safe deployments require disciplined staging workflows. Testing in staging before production deployment prevented issues from affecting users.
Custom Code Fills Gaps
Sometimes custom code is the right solution when visual builders reach their limits. Extending Elementor with custom PHP and JavaScript enabled pixel-perfect output.
Deployment Without Downtime
Careful planning and staging-first deployment enabled effectively zero downtime for the production migration.
